Newsletter popup

An email signup that opens over the page after a delay. Off by default, and found in the Overlays group.

Newsletter popup invites visitors to join your email list in a small window that opens over the page, a few seconds after they arrive. It is off by default: nothing opens until you turn it on.

It is built to be polite. It opens once, waits for the delay you choose, and then leaves the customer alone for a number of days. Customers who subscribe never see it again.

The Newsletter popup section.

Where to find it

The popup is not added from Add section. It lives in its own group, Overlays, in the left sidebar of the theme editor, below the footer. The group is shared by every page of the store.

  1. In the theme editor, scroll to the bottom of the left sidebar and find Overlays.
  2. Select Newsletter popup. The popup opens in the preview while the section is selected, so you can see your changes.
  3. Turn on Show popup, write your heading and text, and save.

When it opens

  • Delay before it opens is how long a visitor has been on the page before the popup opens, from 0 to 60 seconds. The default is 10 seconds. Give visitors time to see the store first.
  • Show again after is how many days pass before a customer who closed the popup sees it again, from 1 to 90 days. The default is 14 days.
  • Customers who subscribe, through the popup or through any other signup form on your store, do not see it again.
  • The popup never opens on top of the cart drawer, the search panel or a quick view. It waits until that one is closed.

The theme remembers this in the customer's browser, not in their account. A customer on a new device, or one who clears their browser data, may see the popup again. If a browser blocks that storage, the popup does not open at all, so nobody is shown it on every page.

In the theme editor

In the editor, the popup shows only while its section is selected, whatever Show popup is set to. This lets you design it without turning it on, and keeps it out of the way while you edit other sections.

What customers see

A heading, your text, an email field with a subscribe button, and your consent text. With an Image, the image sits beside the form on desktop and tablet, and is left out on mobile to keep the popup small. Customers close it with the close button, the Escape key or by selecting outside it.

Customers who sign up are added to your customer list in Shopify as email subscribers, the same as with the Newsletter section.

Image sizes

ImageRecommendedNotes
Popup image 1000 x 1250 px (4:5 portrait) Cropped to the height of the popup around its focal point.

Upload JPG or PNG files. Shopify resizes and compresses each image for the customer's screen, so there is no need to make smaller copies yourself.

Tips

  • Check the rules on email marketing and consent where you sell before you turn the popup on.
  • A delay of 10 to 20 seconds lets visitors look around first. A popup at 0 seconds is the one people close without reading.
  • Say what subscribers get, and keep to it: new collections, early access, or a note now and then.
  • To test as a customer, open your store in a private browser window. It starts with nothing remembered.
