Customer accounts let customers sign in to see their orders and saved addresses. Whether your store has accounts, and which kind, is decided in your Shopify admin. The theme's part is the account icon in the header and, for one kind of account, the account pages themselves.
Turn accounts on
In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Customer accounts. Once accounts are on, the account icon appears in Masthead's header, and a sign in link appears in the mobile menu. With accounts off, neither is shown.
Two kinds of account
Shopify offers two versions of customer accounts, and they behave differently with any theme:
- Customer accounts (the current version). Customers sign in with a one-time code sent to their email, with no password. The sign in and account pages are hosted and designed by Shopify, and follow your checkout branding, not your theme.
- Legacy customer accounts. Customers sign in with an email and password. The pages are part of your theme, so they use Masthead's design.
Masthead works with both. Shopify's own guide explains the differences and how to switch: Customer accounts.
The account icon and menu
The header's account icon takes signed-out customers to sign in. For signed-in customers it opens a small menu, chosen in the header's Customer account menu setting. Shopify creates a default menu for this; edit it in your Shopify admin under Content > Menus to add links such as Orders, Profile or your returns page. See Header.
The account pages in the theme
With legacy customer accounts, customers see these Masthead pages:
- Customer sign in. Sign in, with the password reset form on the same page behind a "Forgot your password?" link.
- Customer registration. Create an account.
- Customer account. The customer's order history and details.
- Customer order. One order: its items, totals, and billing and shipping addresses.
- Customer addresses. Add, edit and delete saved addresses, and choose a default.
- Activate account and Reset password. The pages customers reach from Shopify's account emails.
To edit one, use the page selector at the top of the theme editor and look under Customer accounts. Each page's section has two kinds of setting: a Color scheme, and Top spacing and Bottom spacing. The wording of forms and messages comes from the theme's language file, which you can change under Edit default theme content; see the FAQ.
Tips
- Use the same color scheme on all the account pages, so moving between them feels like one place.
- Customers can always check out as guests unless you require accounts in your Shopify settings.
- If your store uses the current version of customer accounts, style those pages in your checkout settings, not in the theme.
